What Happens to the Human Mind During an Eclipse

Tomorrow, August 12, 2026, the sky genuinely darkens over much of Spain. And with it, something far older than astronomy kicks into gear inside the heads of thousands of people.

You don’t need to believe in omens to notice it.

The light drops suddenly.

The temperature falls.

Birds, in many field observations, stop singing.

And something in the body reacts before reason finishes the sentence “this is just an astronomical event.”

What’s about to happen in the sky, according to the National Geographic Institute

This isn’t a theoretical exercise.

  • On August 12, 2026, Spain experiences one of the most anticipated total solar eclipses in decades.
  • The path of totality crosses the northern half of the peninsula from west to east (Galicia, Asturias, Castile and León, Cantabria, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community) and also the Balearic Islands.
  • Cities like A Coruña, Lugo, Oviedo, Santander, Bilbao, Burgos, Valladolid, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona, and Valencia will see the sun fully covered for a bit more than a minute, according to data from the National Geographic Institute.
  • The rest of the country, including Madrid, will see it as a partial eclipse, not a total one.
  • It will happen late in the afternoon, with the sun already very low on the horizon, almost coinciding with sunset.

That last detail isn’t a minor point for what comes next: the eclipse’s darkness is going to blend with the darkness of sunset itself, exactly the kind of sensory ambiguity the human mind struggles hardest to interpret.

The sun is never just the sun to the mind

Carl G. Jung devoted much of his early work to showing something very specific: across cultures separated by thousands of miles and thousands of years, the sun keeps showing up as the same symbol.

  • In Psychology of the Unconscious (1916, a revised version of his 1912 book), Jung documents how different mythologies represent the solar hero: a luminous, victorious figure who dies and is reborn with the sun’s own cycle.
  • In Man and His Symbols (1964), he shows the same pattern through very different images: the solar disk over pharaoh Tutankhamun, or the mirror representing the divine sun in Japanese Shinto.
  • His underlying reading: the sun functions, almost universally, as a symbol of consciousness itself. Of what’s seen clearly. Of what’s alive and active, as opposed to what’s dark and unknown.

This doesn’t mean an eclipse “means” something supernatural.

It means something simpler, and at the same time more interesting: the human mind has been associating sun = order, light = the comprehensible since long before there were telescopes.

When that association breaks, even for a minute, something in the psyche registers the disruption before conscious thought does.

Why the body reacts before reason understands anything

Jung uses one specific word for what happens right after: misoneism.

  • It’s, literally, the fear of the new.
  • Jung describes it in Man and His Symbols as a reaction present both in the peoples he calls primitive and in contemporary human beings.
  • It isn’t an isolated cultural glitch. It is, in his description, a psychological tendency shared by the whole species.

Jung also draws on a concept he took from French ethnologist Lucien Lévy-Bruhl: loss of soul.

  • In many traditional cultures, this described what we’d now call dissociation: a momentary rupture in the unity of consciousness in the face of something that overwhelms what was expected.
  • You don’t need to believe literally in souls to recognize the mechanism. It’s the same “this can’t be happening” feeling anyone can notice in the face of a sudden, out-of-the-ordinary event.
  • Jung insists on an important point: this fragility of consciousness isn’t rare or pathological. It is, he says, “a normal fact that can be observed at any time and in any place.”

An eclipse brings together exactly the ingredients that trigger that reaction:

  1. It’s sudden in how it’s perceived, even though it’s predictable in how it’s calculated.
  2. It’s rare, so the experience isn’t automated. Tomorrow’s will be the first total eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912, more than a century without this specific experience repeating here.
  3. It affects something the body constantly uses as a reference point: light.

Knowing it’s coming doesn’t prevent the surprise

Here a second mechanism comes in, described by a psychologist very different from Jung: Leon Festinger.

In A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957), Festinger lays out an idea that became one of the pillars of social psychology:

  • The mind can hold two cognitions (ideas, beliefs, perceptions) at the same time.
  • When those two cognitions don’t fit together, an uncomfortable tension shows up: cognitive dissonance.
  • That tension doesn’t just sit there. It pushes the mind to resolve it somehow: by changing a belief, downplaying the conflict, or looking for an explanation that reconciles both.

During an eclipse, those two clashing cognitions are easy to spot:

  • What I know: the sun is still there, this is an orbital alignment predicted years in advance.
  • What I perceive: the light drops suddenly, something in the environment changes in a way the body doesn’t associate with any normal time of day.

The modern mind usually resolves that dissonance with the scientific explanation itself.

The human mind, for centuries, didn’t have that tool on hand. And it still needed to resolve the same tension.

That’s why almost no ancient culture settled for a simple “I don’t know”: it invented dragons, jaguars, or wolves swallowing the sun. Not as a meaningless story, but as a way of closing that dissonance with a manageable narrative.

What changes when a group experiences it, not just one person

Up to this point, everything happens inside a single head. But an eclipse is almost never experienced alone.

Psychologist Glynis M. Breakwell, in The Psychology of Risk (2nd ed., 2014, Cambridge University Press), describes in detail how the perception of a threatening or uncertain phenomenon changes as soon as a group is involved.

  • She cites the theory of social representations, formulated by Serge Moscovici, to explain how a group turns something new and unknown into something it can understand and share.
  • The mechanism has two steps: anchoring (linking the unknown to something already known) and objectification (giving it a concrete, almost visual form).
  • A dragon devouring the sun isn’t a poetic whim. It’s anchoring and objectification in pure form: the only way many cultures had of “putting a face” on a phenomenon that would otherwise be pure, unexplained darkness.

Breakwell also describes, citing the framework of the social amplification of risk (originally formulated by Kasperson and colleagues in 1988), how a group’s collective reaction to something uncertain feeds back on itself:

  • One person perceives something strange.
  • They communicate it to others.
  • The group, through conversation, rumor, or media, can amplify that perception well beyond what the fact itself would justify.

As a real example of that process, though in a different context, Breakwell cites the case of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) in the United Kingdom: a study later discredited was enough for vaccination coverage to fall from 92% in 1996 to 61% in 2003, according to data she cites from Murch (2003). Not because the science had changed, but because a minority narrative got socially amplified enough to displace expert consensus for years.

An eclipse runs on the same group mechanics, even though the outcome is far more harmless: what a single person would interpret as a simple astronomical fact, the group can just as easily turn into an omen, a celebration, or collective science, depending on which narrative anchors the shared conversation first.

A very old mismatch with a very recent explanation

None of this makes an eclipse mysterious in any literal sense.

But it does explain why, for one minute, something so precisely calculated by astronomy can feel like a crack in the order of things.

  • The sun, to the mind, has never been just a star: it’s the most universal symbol of consciousness and clarity.
  • Misoneism makes any sudden break from what’s expected trigger an alert reflex, even when there’s no real danger.
  • Cognitive dissonance forces the mind to reconcile what it knows with what it feels, with science, or, for nearly all of human history, with myth.
  • And the group doesn’t just repeat that individual reaction: it amplifies it, shapes it, and often turns it into a shared story.

Tomorrow afternoon, as the sky darkens over half the country, it’s worth noticing the difference between what the astronomical calendar says and what, during those same seconds, something much older inside your own head is saying.
