What Is Ned Herrmann's Brain Dominance Model?
In the 1970s, consultant Ned Herrmann, who was then working in executive training at General Electric, asked an unusual question for the time: if the brain has specialized parts, why not design a tool that describes how each person thinks based on that specialization? The result was a model that combines two ideas from neuroscience that already existed separately.
Two axes, four quadrants
The first idea is the hemispheric specialization described by Roger Sperry: the left hemisphere, more tied to logic, language, and sequential thinking; the right, more given to the visuospatial, the intuitive, and the emotional. The second is neuroscientist Paul MacLean’s triune brain, which distinguishes between more “cortical” processing (rational, abstract) and more “limbic” processing (emotional, tied to relationships). Herrmann crossed both axes, left/right hemisphere and cortical/limbic, to get four quadrants, each with a different way of thinking, learning, and working:
- Upper left (analytical): logical, fact-based, quantitative. Thinks in terms of data, logic, and cause and effect.
- Lower left (organizer): sequential, planned, detail-oriented. Needs order, structure, and clear steps.
- Lower right (interpersonal): feelings-based, expressive, sensitive to a situation’s emotional context.
- Upper right (holistic): intuitive, integrative, comfortable with ambiguity and big ideas over detail.
Learning according to each quadrant
The model’s practical value shows up when you translate it into how each profile prefers to learn. Someone with a strong preference for the analytical quadrant will understand a topic better if they’re given the data and the reasoning first. Someone in the organizer quadrant will do better with a clear, step-by-step syllabus with no loose ends. The interpersonal profile learns more easily by discussing an idea with others and connecting it to their own experience. And the holistic profile prefers to start with the big picture before the detail, fitting the pieces together afterward.
Almost nobody fits neatly into a single quadrant: the instrument Herrmann developed, the HBDI, places each person at a point on the map, almost always with a marked preference for two quadrants and less for the other two, not in a single closed box. This fits a principle that shows up in nearly every serious learning-style model: they don’t describe fixed types, but a profile of preferences that can coexist with traits from other quadrants depending on the task. It’s also common for the same person to lean on a different quadrant depending on the terrain: perhaps very organized at work and much more interpersonal and intuitive in their personal life, without any contradiction.
One challenge, four ways to approach it
Picture four different people facing the same task: learning to use a new piece of software at work. The logical profile will want to first understand how it works under the hood and why it was designed that way, before touching anything. The organizer profile will look for a step-by-step manual and feel uneasy having to improvise without one. The interpersonal profile will learn best by asking a colleague to show them in person, asking questions along the way. And the holistic profile will probably prefer to just dive in and start clicking around, without reading anything first, understanding the general logic through experience. No approach is superior to the others: each is simply more efficient for the person using it.
Where this model came from
Herrmann developed his model while working in executive training at General Electric in the 1970s, looking for a tool that would help explain why the same training program worked very well with some employees and left others cold. Over time, Herrmann Brain Dominance Technology spread far beyond the company where it was born, becoming one of the standard references, alongside Kolb’s model and Honey and Mumford’s, for explaining why the same content can be taught in very different ways depending on who it’s aimed at.
Why it connects with other models on this site
The lower-left quadrant, centered on order and sequence, shares ground with what people with a reading/writing style look for when organizing their knowledge in writing. The upper-right quadrant, more intuitive and less tied to verbal detail, has things in common with people who learn better by doing than by reading step-by-step instructions. Neither model measures exactly the same thing (one focuses on the input channel, the other on the processing style), but both start from the same real premise: the brain doesn’t process information in just one way, and knowing your preferred way of doing it is, above all, a tool for self-knowledge, not a final label.
