Kinesthetic Learning Style: Learning by Doing
Kinesthetic style: when practicing teaches more than reading or listening
People whose predominant style is kinesthetic learn better by doing a task themselves than by watching someone else do it or reading about how to do it. For this style, the body and physical action are an active part of the learning process.
They often find it harder to hold attention through long stretches of purely theoretical study with no practical application, unlike someone with an auditory style, who can sustain attention through a long spoken explanation without needing to move.
A simple example of the pattern
Learning to tie a knot by looking at a diagram or hearing it described rarely works for this style: you have to pick up the rope and try it with your hands, several times, before it sticks. That same pattern shows up more broadly:
- They learn better by practicing than by watching a demonstration or reading instructions.
- They find it hard to sit still for long while learning something new, even when they’re interested in the topic.
- They need to move or physically handle something to concentrate well on a complex task.
The VARK model links this style to early hands-on practice (learning by doing, even through initial mistakes), alternating theory with movement in short sessions, and manipulative exercises or simulations as an alternative to purely theoretical material.
A very old idea, the same insight
Confucius summed up this same idea more than two thousand years ago: “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.” It’s no coincidence that the kinesthetic style connects so well with process-centered learning models, like David Kolb’s: the “active experimentation” stage of his learning cycle, and the “activist” style Peter Honey and Alan Mumford later described, share the same underlying idea with this style: you learn by trying things, not just by watching or reading about them.
Why repeated practice matters so much
Journalist Malcolm Gladwell, in his book Outliers: The Story of Success (2008), popularized an idea that came from psychologist Anders Ericsson’s research on the development of mastery: reaching real command of a complex skill almost always demands thousands of hours of sustained, focused practice, not just raw talent. Gladwell gathered examples from very different fields, from musicians to programmers, to show that behind most great experts lies an enormous number of accumulated practice hours, not just a starting gift. This idea maps directly onto the kinesthetic style: the reason practicing teaches you more than reading or listening isn’t a superficial preference, it’s that repeating the action itself is, according to this research, the actual mechanism behind deep learning in nearly any skill.
A different kind of memory, with its own home in the brain
Neuroscience distinguishes between two broad families of memory: declarative (facts and data you can explain in words, like a date or a formula) and non-declarative or procedural (skills executed automatically, like riding a bike or typing). The second isn’t built by listening to an explanation or reading a manual: it’s built by repeating the action over and over, until it’s registered in the motor areas of the cerebral cortex, the basal ganglia, and the cerebellum, not in the areas linked to language.
That’s the same reason someone can explain, in complete detail and from memory, exactly how to tie a knot and still fail to do it right the first time with their hands: they’re two different memory systems, and the procedural one only gets built through real physical practice, physically changing the brain. When this style struggles to “stick with just the theory,” it isn’t a lack of attention, it’s that the skill being learned lives, literally, in a brain circuit that only trains by doing.
