Visual Learning Style: Learning by Seeing

Visual style: when an image beats an explanation

People whose predominant style is visual retain information better when they can see it represented: a diagram, a chart, a mind map. Text or a spoken explanation alone, with no visual support, is harder for them to recall accurately.

It isn’t an aesthetic preference: it’s a real difference in how they process and fix information in memory. It’s also common for it to combine with other styles: many visual people are also strong in the reading/writing style, taking notes that include diagrams and not just running text.

How this style shows up

Someone with this style studying, say, the circulatory system, will probably remember a diagram of the heart’s chambers and the path of the blood better than the same content described in a paragraph of running text, even if it says exactly the same thing. That’s a small example of a broader pattern:

  • They remember what they’ve seen better than what they’ve only heard or read as running text.
  • They spontaneously draw or sketch things out when trying to explain or understand something complex.
  • They mentally visualize information as a natural memorization strategy.
  • The difference shows up most with abstract content: a concept with no visual support is harder for them to fix in place than one paired with a diagram, however simple.

The VARK model links this style to mind maps, diagrams, using color to categorize information, and videos with visual support, though results can vary by person and subject.

Looking isn’t enough, you have to organize what you see

This style describes the channel you prefer to receive information through, but other models look at a different question: which stage of the learning process you’re most comfortable in. In David Kolb’s experiential learning cycle, sketching and visualizing an idea fits well with the “abstract conceptualization” stage (turning a concrete experience into a model or general theory), the same stage Peter Honey and Alan Mumford later linked to their “theorist” style. The two approaches don’t compete: you can be visual in how you process information and, at the same time, more practical or more reflective in how you approach the learning process as a whole.

Making good diagrams is also a trained skill

It’s easy to think that organizing information well into a mind map or a clear diagram is a gift some people have and others don’t. Psychologist Carol Dweck, in her book Mindset (2006), documented something different: people who believe a skill can be developed through effort and practice tend to improve more and give up less than those who see it as a fixed talent you’re either born with or not, the core idea behind a growth mindset. The same idea applies here: drawing clear diagrams, choosing what to highlight visually, sketching a mind map that actually helps you understand a topic, is a skill that improves with practice, not a gift reserved for people who are naturally “good with visuals.” If your first attempts at diagrams come out messy, that doesn’t say anything about your learning style, it says you still need practice organizing them.

A real study with seventh-grade students

A team of researchers at the Technical University of Ambato (Pazán Torres et al., 2017) tested this idea with 40 seventh-grade students, ages 10 to 14. Over 21 days, they ran activities designed to stimulate the visual style: spot-the-difference exercises, mazes, building mind maps, memorizing observed objects. Before and after the program, they measured each student’s long-term retention with the same test.

The result, calculated with a Z statistical test, was clear: long-term memory improved significantly after the three weeks of visual activities, enough to rule out chance as the explanation. The study itself points to the likely reason: the more deeply an image is processed (not just looked at, but actively linked to what you already know), the easier it is to retrieve it from memory afterward. Drawing a diagram isn’t just “making it pretty”: it’s literally a way of fixing it more firmly in place.
