Auditory Learning Style: Learning by Listening

Auditory style: when listening sticks better than reading

People whose predominant style is auditory understand and retain a topic better when they hear it explained, whether in a class, a conversation, or an audio recording, compared to reading it in silence.

They tend to recall conversations and spoken explanations in detail, even weeks after hearing them. It’s common for this to coexist with traits of other styles, like the visual or kinesthetic one, in different proportions depending on the subject.

The process matters as much as the channel

The channel you prefer to receive information through (listening, in this case) is only part of the picture: other models look at a different question, which stage of the learning process you’re most comfortable in. Listening to an explanation and discussing it with others fits well with the “reflective observation” stage of David Kolb’s experiential learning cycle, reviewing and interpreting an experience before drawing conclusions, the same stage Peter Honey and Alan Mumford later linked to their “reflector” style. The two approaches don’t compete: you can be auditory in how you process information and, at the same time, more active or more theoretical in how you approach the learning process as a whole.

Signs that point to this style

Two people can attend the same talk and walk away with very different memories: someone with this style often reconstructs, almost word for word, a sentence that caught their attention, while the same content read in writing slips away more easily. The pattern repeats on several fronts:

  • They understand a topic better heard than read, even when the content is exactly the same.
  • They remember conversations with precision, sometimes down to the tone or exact words used.
  • They repeat information out loud spontaneously as a memorization strategy.

The VARK model links this style to explaining things out loud, listening to podcasts or audiobooks, and group discussion as formats that favor retention, though results can vary by person and subject.

Listening well is also a trained skill

It’s easy to assume that retaining a spoken explanation is simply a gift, something some people are naturally better at than others. Psychologist Carol Dweck, in her book Mindset (2006), documented something different: people who believe a skill can be developed through practice tend to improve more than those who see it as a fixed talent, the foundation of what she calls a growth mindset. The same idea applies here: the ability to reconstruct a spoken explanation accurately, or make sense of a complex conversation as it unfolds, improves when it’s actively exercised, for example by summarizing out loud what you just heard instead of just listening passively. If a long talk slips away from you the first time, that doesn’t say anything definitive about your learning style, it says that particular muscle still has room to train.

Why spoken language has its own “lane” in the brain

Neuroscientist Roger Sperry’s experiments with patients whose corpus callosum (the bundle of fibers connecting the two hemispheres) had been surgically severed revealed something very specific about language: when a word was projected so it only reached the patient’s left hemisphere, the patient could read it and say it out loud without any problem. When the same word reached only the right hemisphere, the patient was unable to name it, even though in many cases they could point to the correct object with their left hand. This work, which earned him the Nobel Prize in 1981, confirmed that speech and spoken language processing depend heavily on the left hemisphere.

This doesn’t mean there’s an “auditory brain” separate from the rest: it means that the channel through which spoken information best enters (the ear) feeds into a circuit that’s quite specialized in organizing language logically and sequentially, the same one at work when you summarize out loud or repeat an idea to fix it in place. Listening well, in that sense, activates a very specific piece of machinery, not just a preference.
