John Gottman, psychologist and researcher at the University of Washington, spent several decades studying what sets couples who stay together and happy apart from those who end up separating. What the analysis actually looks at
Gottman’s coding system doesn’t focus on the surface content of the conversation (what topic they’re discussing), it focuses on the form. Among other things, it analyzes:
- Whether a disagreement starts with what he calls a “harsh startup” (criticizing the other person’s character from the first sentence) or with a more careful framing of the problem.
- Whether, when one partner voices a complaint, the other responds to the facts or responds defensively, already assuming an attack.

One example Gottman documents in his own research involves a couple he calls Dara and Oliver, observed over a full night in the lab apartment: the way both of them handle a specific disagreement, more than the content of the disagreement itself, is what his team ended up using as material for the predictive model.
Why this method changed the study of relationships
Before this kind of research, much of what was known about couples came from therapists describing specific clinical cases, not from systematic observational data on couples without diagnosed problems. The Love Lab let Gottman accumulate hours of real interaction from hundreds of couples, compare the ones who stayed stable over the years against the ones who separated, and statistically isolate which specific behaviors set one group apart from the other. An unexpected finding: the immune system
One of the most striking results to come out of the lab itself had nothing to do with communication, it had to do with the body. Gottman documents that, analyzing blood samples from fifty couples who spent the night in the Love Lab, his team found a real difference in white blood cell response (the immune system’s first line of defense) between couples who were very satisfied with their relationship and those who showed up as neutral or dissatisfied. According to his research, a happy marriage isn’t just linked to better emotional health, it’s tied to a measurable immune response distinct from that of a strained relationship.
