Free emotional intelligence test: 20 questions about your profile across Goleman's five components.
Short 15-question test on whether you manage to identify the emotion underneath (fear, sadness) or stay stuck on the surface reaction, like anger.
Short 15-question test on the "emotional hijacking" described by Daniel Goleman: how hard it is to think clearly when your amygdala reacts first.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions, as well as to recognize and respond appropriately to other people's. The concept, popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman building on the academic work of Peter Salovey and John Mayer, changed how personal and professional success are understood: IQ alone isn't enough, how we handle emotions matters just as much, if not more.
The model describes five components:
It isn't a fixed profile: each component can be trained on its own.
Goleman illustrates self-regulation with what he calls an "emotional hijacking": the amygdala, the brain structure that processes fear and other alarm signals, can trigger an automatic reaction (fight, freeze, or flight) before the brain's more reflective part even has time to size up the situation. Noticing that instant is a first step toward not getting stuck in it. He also draws on psychologist Walter Mischel's famous marshmallow experiment, in which a child's ability to delay an immediate reward predicted, years later, better academic and social outcomes, as an argument that self-regulation can be trained from an early age.
Our test is a popular-science, informational take inspired by this model: it doesn't replace a professional psychological assessment or a clinically validated emotional intelligence test.
The ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions and other people's, with a direct impact on your relationships and wellbeing.
According to Goleman's model: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
According to Goleman's research, unlike IQ (which stays fairly stable), the components of emotional intelligence are described as more malleable over time, though each person's actual process can vary.
Numerous studies link it to leadership and job performance, though like any psychological trait, it's not the only factor, and a popular-science measure like this one has its limits.
No. It's an orientation-only, informational approximation of the model's five components, not a validated clinical scale.
It shouldn't. This is an informational, self-knowledge quiz, without the psychometric safeguards or design needed to support a hiring decision.
